FAIRBANKS — City efforts to conserve energy have grabbed the attention of retailers from across the nation.

Philip Curtis, owner of HolidayLEDs, a Michigan-based holiday lighting company, issued a press release stating his company was to donate four cases of LED Christmas lights to an “Alaska town struggling to cut energy costs.”

High energy costs have communities reconsidering their lighting technology

The engineer for the City of Fairbanks, Alaska recently conducted an energy audit and found that the cities' 2646 street lights cost $535,000 to operate each year. The number was staggering considering that the communities total electric bill was $880,000. Now the city engineer and other city officials are studying the situation and trying to determine what can be done to reduce the energy costs.

Columbus Zoo to switch to LED Christmas lights

The Columbus Zoo located in Columbus, Ohio announced that it received a grant in excess of $300,000 to replace all of its holiday lights with energy efficient LED Christmas lights. A recent article from WTOL.com reports the the zoo will replace approximately 2 million incandescent lights with LED lights over the next 2 years.

Canadians are leading the charge with energy efficient lighting technology and are reducing their country's energy consumption as a result.

The Ontario Power Authority recently reported that electricity use in Ontario is decreasing. From 2005 to 2007, the average per capita consumption of electricity decreased by about four per cent.

The complaints continue. We began seeing editorials about Christmas light displays that were still standing in February and they have continued sporadically since then. I found another article about this "problem" last week. The question I would like to have answers is whether these lights are actually lights that were installed for the Christmas holiday or whether they are just Christmas "style" lights being used year round.
